Bruce Kaz - President and Managing Director, Individual Investment Solutions and Research
Bruce directs Courier Capital’s economic, strategic, and equity research platforms. He also is senior member of the firm’s investment strategy group and manages investment programs for some of the firm’s largest clients.
Bruce received his undergraduate degree in natural sciences from Daemen and SUNY Buffalo. He moved to NYC to attend New York Law School, earning a Juris Doctorate. Upon graduation he was recruited to manage investments for Chase Manhattan Bank’s Private Banking Division, which also sponsored his post graduate research in economics. He returned to Buffalo in 1985 to work for HSBC’s Private Clients’ Group. In addition to his investment management duties there, Bruce was a senior member of the Investment Strategy & Policy Committee for the Americas. He also served as President & Investment Products Director of a 350 bank consortium responsible for the design, development & implementation of investment and trading platforms in use by major institutions, worldwide. He joined Courier in 2000 and currently directs the firm’s Economic, Strategic and Equity Research platforms.
Bruce is an active member of several area endowment boards and committees. He is well known in the Buffalo not-for-profit community. |

William H. Gurney - Managing Director, Fixed Income Research and Management
In addition to client portfolio management, Bill leads our fixed income research and strategy function, and provides fundamental research support to our economic and equity research process.
Bill studied finance & economics at St. Lawrence University. After graduation, he relocated to San Francisco and traded fixed income instruments for Bank of America’s corporate portfolio. Bill was recruited by HSBC to manage its North American municipal bond & futures portfolio. He later joined HSBC’s Private Clients’ Group where he managed stock and bond portfolios for high net worth individuals, corporations and foundations. Most recently, Bill was instrumental in successfully implementing and developing the bank’s brokerage business. He joined Courier in 2003.
Bill is currently a Director of an international investment company and is an active board member of several area foundations. |

Randy M. Ordines - Managing Director, Consulting Services
Randy is responsible for the design & development of Courier’s consulting platform. Randy directs the Firm’s InvestView Consulting Services used by foundations, corporations, retirement plans and affluent families, nationwide. In concert with Courier’s professional staff, he works with many of Courier’s largest clients to build, manage, and monitor objectives-based investment programs.
Randy is the areas foremost expert on the investment process, strategy formation, policy development, manager analysis, and fiduciary compliance. He also manages the firm’s advisory services for analysis, consultation and management of Asset/Liability Duration matching solutions for bank balance sheets and defined benefit pension plans.
Randy has spent his entire career in the field of investment consulting and management. Prior to joining Courier Capital in 1992, he was Vice President and portfolio manager for HSBC Bank, USA where in addition to managing client portfolios, he also served on the regional Trust Investment Compliance Committee. Previously, he was regional manager for E.F. Hutton’s Consulting Service Group. He earned his B.A. degree in Economics from Hobart College.
Randy has served on several local and nationwide Boards of Director and Advisory Boards. He was a founder and Director of Jamestown Savings Bank. Currently, he is a Director and Treasurer of the Reginald A. & Elizabeth S. Lenna Foundation, Inc. |

Thomas J. Hanlon, CFA, CFP®, CEBS - Partner, Research Analyst and Director of Retirement Plan Services
In addition to managing research activities, Tom is part of the Firm’s investment strategy group and is responsible for portfolio management. Tom's broad credentials add great technical expertise to our corporate 401(k) and individual financial planning services.
Prior to joining Courier Capital, Tom was a Vice President & Senior Portfolio Manager and Regional Manager for M&T Bank’s Private Client Services. He was responsible for managing investment portfolios for high net worth clients, institutions, foundations, and employee benefit plans. He also managed the Trust & Estates, Employee Benefit, and Portfolio Management sales and client servicing teams for the Western New York region of the Private Client Services group. Previously, Tom was a Vice President & Senior Portfolio Manager with HSBC Bank, USA where in addition to managing client portfolios, he also served as Chairman for the regional Trust Investment Compliance Committee and provided financial planning services for high net worth clients.
Tom holds a B.S. degree in Business Management from Canisius College and earned his M.B.A. in Finance from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charter-holder of the CFA Institute, a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) licensee governed by the CFP Board of Standards, and earned the Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS) designation through the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans.
Tom is the President of the CFA Society of Buffalo for the 2008-2009 fiscal year, and is also on the Board of Directors for the society. He is also active in coaching his children’s soccer teams, involved in youth baseball, and has served as a committee member and leader for local Boy Scout and Cub Scout Troops.

Brian M. Geary, CFP®, CIMA, CPA - Senior Investment Strategist Brian is a senior member of Courier’s Investment Strategy Group and also is responsible for portfolio management for many of Courier’s clients. He focuses on providing investment consulting, personal financial planning services, and assisting many of Courier’s clients in working towards achieving their financial goals. He is also an instrumental part of Courier’s compliance initiatives.
Prior to joining Courier Capital, Brian started his career at Ernst & Young in 1995 where he performed audit and financial statement review services. In addition, he provided tax consulting, research and advisory services in several areas including: high-net worth individual financial planning, retirement planning, trust and estate planning and corporate consulting. Most notably, he was instrumental in developing a multi-million dollar annual revenue investment advisory practice.Most recently, Brian spent his last 7 years at Sanderson and Company where he was promoted to Partner after his first year. Brian was a member of the Firm’s Investment Committee, co-directed the Firm’s business development efforts and also served as the Firm’s compliance officer. He was most well-known for his ability to deliver exceptional service and advice to his clients and this manifested in his substantial contributions to the Firm’s growth.
A graduate of Canisius College with a B.S in Accounting, Brian is a Certified Public Accountant, a member of the New York Society of Certified Public Accountants, the Investment Management Consultants Association and the American Association of Individual Investors. A former member of the St. Joseph Collegiate Institute Alumni Board of Directors, Brian earned the Certified Management Analyst designation at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania as well as the Certified Financial Planner designation. Brian is a former Director and Treasurer of the Buffalo Yacht Club where he served on the finance committee. Currently, he serves as a Director and Treasurer at ArtPark where he is the chair of the Audit and Finance Committee. He also is a Director and Treasurer for the Friends of the E. M. Cotter Organization, Buffalo’s Fireboat.

Jery K. Chambers – Senior Portfolio Manager
Jery is based in Buffalo, and earned his BA in English from SUNY at Buffalo and his MBA in Finance from Canisius College. He was the Director of Research at M&T Bank in Buffalo prior to joining Courier Capital in 1981. Jery is a research analyst and portfolio manager specializing in equity and asset manager analysis. He also serves as the firm’s compliance officer. Jery has served in a fiduciary capacity with several non-profit organizations in the Buffalo area, and he has taught several college level courses on investment management.

Alan R. Abels – Investment Consultant
Alan is located in our Buffalo office, and he earned a BA in Philosophy from Oblate College and a MS in Counseling Psychology from Niagara University. Prior to joining Courier Capital in 1998 Alan was a founder and principal of an investment advisory firm in Buffalo, NY and was a sales and performance consultant to local business and sales organizations. He is currently responsible for developing and servicing investment consulting clients for Courier Capital. Alan is a member of the Center for Values and Philosophy, Catholic University, Washington, DC. He is also on the Board of Directors for Oblate College in Washington, DC.

Edwin J. Miner – Investment Consultant
Ed is based in our Jamestown office, and earned his BA in English and a BS in Psychology from SUNY at Buffalo, and an MSW in Social Services Administration from West Virginia University. For 18 years Ed was Commissioner of Social Services and Commissioner of Health in Chautauqua County, N.Y. where he oversaw 400 employees and $120,000,000 in annual expenditures. He also has an extensive background in management consulting with particular experience in the not-for-profit, institutional and health care sectors. Ed is currently responsible for developing and servicing investment consulting and management clients for Courier Capital. He also services many of Courier’s high net worth and institutional clients. Ed is a lecturer in Research Methods at the State University of New York at Buffalo, a Director and Vice President of the Jamestown YMCA, and a former President of the statewide New York Public Welfare Association.

David S. Bard - Investment Consultant
David is located in our Buffalo office, and earned his BA in Economics from Hobart College. Prior to joining Courier Capital in 2008, David was a Financial Consultant with Smith Barney. Previously, he worked with McDonald Investments as a Financial Consultant, and with Oppenheimer as a Director of Fixed Income Trading. David is currently responsible for developing and servicing retirement plan clients for Courier Capital. He is on the Executive Board of the Emerging Leaders Society of The United Way, and is involved in coaching youth soccer and youth hockey.

Jean M. Johansson, CFP® – Client Services & Financial Planning
Jean received her BA in English from Kenyon College. Prior to joining Courier Capital in 1998, she spent the first 12 years of her career in retail banking, first with Empire of America, FSB and following its acquisition, with M&T Bank. While at M&T, she held NASD Series 6 and 63 licenses as well as New York State Life, Accident and Health Insurance licenses. Jean has been a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) licensee governed by the CFP Board of Standards since 2003. Jean is an active member of the Board of Deacons of Westminster Church and the Alumnae Board of the Buffalo Seminary, and she has also served as an alumni volunteer for Kenyon College.
Nora C. Schrantz – Manager of Administration, InvestView Services
Nora is a Jamestown native with a B.S. in Business Management Administration from SUNY Fredonia. After graduation, Nora worked as a Financial Analyst in the marketing department of Alltel Corporation. In 1993, Nora joined Courier Capital with administrative and operational roles. In addition to handling administrative responsibilities for some of the firm’s most significant relationships, Nora has been instrumental in building Courier’s investment accounting, performance measurement and InvestView reporting platforms.
Karen L. Mudrak – Marketing & Client Services
Karen earned her bachelors degree in finance from St. Bonaventure University. She went on to get her MBA from Canisius College with a concentration in financial services. Karen began her career at HSBC Brokerage where she obtained her NASD licenses Series 7, 63 and Life, Accident and Health Insurance licenses. She also worked at Morgan Stanley for two years as a Registered Client Service Associate, where she was a member of the CSA Advisory Council.
